Comparison of human calcitonin secretion after a 1-minute calcium infusion in young normal and in elderly subjects.

چکیده
Human calcitonin (hCT) response to a 1-minute calcium infusion was studied in 6 male and 4 female young normal subjects and in 6 male and 6 female elderly subjects. In the young subjects plasma hCT levels increased significantly (p less than 0.01) from mean basal value of 82.3 +/- 48.7 pg/ml to maximum level of 407.5 +/-198.0 pg/ml in the male, while it increased from 96.3 +/- 89.2 to 216.3 +/- 89.1 pg/ml p less than 0.05) in the female. In the elderly subjects, it increased from 80.3 +/- 56.9 pg/ml to maximum level of 229.2 +/- 130.6 pg/ml (p less than 0.05) in the male, while it increased from 109.2 +/- 43.7 to 163.3 +/- 55.7 pg/ml (p less than 0.005) in the female. There was no significant difference in the basal hCT level of these 4 groups. In both the young and the elderly, however, mean increment of hCT level was significantly (p less than 0.05) higher in the male than in the female of the same-aged group. In both the female and the male subjects, it was significantly (p less than 0.05) higher in the young than in the elderly of the same sex. A 1-minute infusion of calcium can be used as a reliable provocative test for hCT secretion in human subjects.

Calcitonin secretion in congenital nongoitrous cretinism.
Plasma calcitonin (CT) was measured in the basal state and/or during provocative tests of hormone secretion in 11 children with congenital non-goitrous cretinism (CNC), in 1 girl with a lingual thyroid, and in 11 normal children. Basal and stimulated CT concentrations were significantly lower in the patients with CNC than in the normal subjects. Mean basal CT (+/- SE) was 41 +/- 4 pg/ml in the ...

Jejunal absorption of calcium, water, and electrolytes was measured in 10 normal subjects by the triple-lumen perfusion method. During the control period, water and electrolyte movements were minimal when a bicarbonate-free test solution was infused. By contrast, bicarbonate-containing solutions were readily absorbed in the control period. Intravenous infusion of synthetic salmon calcitonin (SC...

The objective of the present study was to determine the effect of chronic calcitonin deficiency on bone mass development. The results of 11 patients with thyroid dysgenesis (TD) were compared to those of 17 normal individuals (C) and of 9 patients with other forms of hypothyroidism (OH): 4 with hypothyroidism due to inborn errors of thyroid hormone synthesis and 5 with Hashimoto's thyroiditis. ...
متن کاملEffect of calcitonin on gastric emptying in patients with an active duodenal ulcer.
In a double blind placebo controlled study the effect of calcitonin on gastric emptying and on serum concentrations of gastrin, insulin, glucose, calcium and phosphorus after a mixed solid-liquid meal was examined in eight patients with duodenal ulcer. Synthetic salmon calcitonin 415 pmol iv was given as a bolus followed by a 90 minute infusion to reach an overall dose of 62.25 pmol/kg. Gastric...
متن کاملIncreased gastrin and calcitonin secretion after oral calcium or peptones administration in patients with hypercalciuria: a clue to an alteration in calcium-sensing receptor activity.
The calcium-sensing receptor (CaSR) has been detected in human antral gastrin-secreting cells, where, upon calcium and/or amino acid allosteric activation, it stimulates gastrin secretion. Patients with absorptive hypercalciuria (AH) display an enhanced gastric acid output; therefore, we evaluated the secretion of gastrin in subjects with AH (30 subjects vs. 30 healthy female controls, all post...
